Overview of Surface Coating of Jewelry and Jade

The surface coating method of jewelry and jadeite is to coat a very thin film on the surface of jewelry and jadeite. Its thickness is usually at the molecular or atomic level. This layer of film is easy to produce interference of light, which results in colorful and beautiful interference colors to achieve the purpose of optimizing treatment. For example, iridescent crystals (also known as Hydraulic crystals) are caused by the interference color produced by coating a thin film on the surface of colorless crystals.

The method of surface coating and the principle of iridescent phenomenon are as follows:


Generally, in vacuum coating machine, the cleaned and dried jewelry and jade products are placed on the bottom of vacuum coating machine, and the metal sheet which produces thin film is put on the cathode. First, vacuum is pumped out, then trigger the arc discharge between the cathode and the anode with a trigger, thus evaporating the cathode (metal) material to the discharge chamber. The plasma state is deposited on the surface of jewellery and jadeite to form a film. Because the thickness of the film is close to the wavelength of light, the reflected light on the surface of the film and the reflected light on the surface of the gemstone (reflected light from the bottom of the film) will interfere with the light, so that people can see the bright rainbow flash.


Material commonly used for surface coating:


Commonly used metals such as Gold, Nickel, Copper, Chromium and so on, the film of Gold has a blue tone, which has a strong iridescent effect.
